With the modern technology of web servers, coding languages, and web standards changing the way they do, web maintenance is much more than just updating content.
Any site that is anything than a few basic static pages will have some form of advanced scripting or tools on it. These can range from photo galleries, newsletter systems, forums, guest books, to full feature CMS applications. All of these features rely on more than basic HTML coding to work. They depend on special software that is running behind the scenes on a web server somewhere to allow them to operate the way they were intended. In addition, even with the best written programs, there are sure to be security holes discovered than can compromise the entire site. This is where the rest of the Website Maintenance comes in.
JTL Web Design manages our own database that keeps a list of all our clients, the server languages and versions their sites are on, and what version all each of the individual programs on their site is running. We regularly check our lists with update servers to see if there is new releases of any of the software our clients have. If we find a new release, we will evaluate it to see if it will interfere with the website if we update it. If not, we will update it right then. If it will cause interference or downtime on the website for more than a few minutes, we will determine if the update is fixing a serious security vulnerability. If so, we will contact the client and advise them of the issue to determine if they wish to take the site offline immediately for the fix (usually no more than 20-30 minutes of downtime) or if they wish keep the site online for the time being and update it that evening. If the update will cause downtime but there is no security issue, we will notify the client that we need to perform the update at their convenience. We will perform these minor updates like this typically during the overnight hours when the traffic on the site is normally its lowest as to cause the least impact possible and to ensure the site is updated and ready to go for the next days traffic again.
In addition to the above, there is also the half of Website Maintenance that most people expect, the updating of the site's content. While the majority of the sites we build are structured with a Content Management System (CMS) which allows clients to manage their own content, we have found that many people would prefer that we handle the major updates for them and we are more than happy to assist. It makes no difference to us if we built the site or if someone else did. We are more than happy to provide the maintenance for the client.
